Explorer F.T. Gregory first surveyed the area of the park in 1861. The Hamersley Range was named after Gregory's friend Edward Hamersley. Like the rest of the Pilbara region, the area has a primarily tropical and semi-arid climate. Thunderstorms as well as cyclones are frequent occurrences in the summer. Summer day temperatures are often over 40 degrees Celsius, but in the winter temperatures can drop below freezing overnight.

Karijini National Park Western Australia is best reached by joining a four wheel drive tour in Perth, approximately 1055 kilometers away. Additional tours are available from the cities of Exmouth, Karratha, and Broome. It is also possible to
hire a vehicle for oneself to drive to the park.
