Advanced Hancock Spider Walk to Kermits
Full cool morning (fit experienced parties only) · Best for: Small groups of fit, experienced gorge walkers — not first-timers
Guide updated · verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA the morning you go
Strong-warning itinerary for Class 5 Hancock Gorge: ladders, Spider Walk, swimming to Kermits Pool, reverse all hard moves. Weather veto, early start, no peer pressure. Many excellent Karijini trips skip this entirely.

This plan exists for people who already understand Karijini wet rock — ideally with Handrail competence — and who accept Class 5 consequence. It is not a social-media obligation.
If one member is unsure at the car park, demote to Handrail or lookouts. Rain cancels. Heat illness signs cancel. Always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA. This independent guide will never claim Hancock is “must-do.”
Rescue timelines in remote gorges are not city-fast. Self-sufficiency and conservative margins are the culture.
Track status and weather change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then follow the timeline below.
Timeline
05:00–05:45
Hard weather and fitness veto
Stable forecast only. Everyone confirms enthusiasm without pressure. Pack dry bags, multi-litre water, headlamps, food, electrolytes. Leave ETA with a reliable contact. If anything feels off, switch plans now.
06:00–06:30
Oxers quick read of sky and junction
Orient, photograph, reassess. Abort here costs little. Abort deep in Hancock costs a lot.
06:30–10:30+
Hancock descent · Spider Walk · Kermits · reverse
Signed Class 5 route only. Controlled ladder use; deliberate Spider Walk technique; swimming sections as water levels dictate. Kermits is optional excellence if margins remain — not a forced trophy. Reverse every hard move with large time buffers. Exit if water rises, confidence drops, or cold stress stacks.
Late morning–afternoon
Rewarm · food · total recovery
Dry clothes immediately. Eat and rehydrate. No Mount Bruce, no second Class 5 idea, no long dusty drive marathon if the group is cooked. Sleep is the plan.

Extra tips
Strong warnings
- Class 5: falls, cold water, flash floods, no easy mid-route bail-out.
- Social media understates slime, water level change and reverse fatigue.
- Weakest technical member sets the pace.
- Turning around above the Spider Walk is competent leadership.
Green / amber / red
- Green: cool, stable, experienced small group, early — proceed with abort rules.
- Amber: warm or mixed confidence — Handrail or lookouts instead.
- Red: rain, illness, peer pressure only, late start — do not enter.
