Itineraries

These plans are built for real Pilbara logistics — entry fees, fuel self-sufficiency, Dales vs Eco bases, heat, cold gorge water and flash-flood honesty — not fantasy “every Class 5 before lunch” checklists. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a full timeline, packing notes and what to skip.

Every itinerary still defers to Explore Parks WA / DBCA for track status, swimming advice and alerts. Print any plan from the page, or grab the free Practical Planner.

Fern Pool in Dales Gorge, Karijini National Park — clear water and gorge walls

Full day to overnight (cool hours heavy)

Classic first visit: Dales swimming + Oxers

Best for: First-timers who want the postcard swim and the western junction view without Class 5

Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool in cool hours, recovery, then Oxers Lookout (and optional Knox) for multi-gorge drama — the gold-standard first Karijini hit that still feels complete as a day trip from Tom Price or a Dales/Eco overnight.

Handrail Pool in Weano Gorge, Karijini National Park — narrow wet-rock gorge swimming hole

Half to full day (early start)

Handrail Pool intermediate challenge day

Best for: Fit intermediate walkers ready to get wet and reverse a scramble

Oxers orientation, then a committed Weano Handrail Pool descent with wet-rock discipline, cold-water awareness and non-negotiable turnaround rules — intermediate challenge without defaulting into Class 5 Hancock.

Handrail Pool in Weano Gorge, Karijini National Park — narrow wet-rock gorge swimming hole

Full cool morning (fit experienced parties only)

Advanced Hancock Spider Walk to Kermits

Best for: Small groups of fit, experienced gorge walkers — not first-timers

Strong-warning itinerary for Class 5 Hancock Gorge: ladders, Spider Walk, swimming to Kermits Pool, reverse all hard moves. Weather veto, early start, no peer pressure. Many excellent Karijini trips skip this entirely.

View from Oxers Lookout toward Junction Pool and Red Gorge, Karijini National Park

Flexible half to full day (heat-paced)

Easy lookouts + gentle swim day

Best for: Lower mobility, families, first confidence days, anyone skipping Class 4/5

Oxers and Knox lookouts for maximum drama per step, plus an optional gentler swim focus (Kalamina or careful Dales/Hamersley depending on ability) — meaningful Karijini without ladders or Spider Walks.

Mount Bruce and Pilbara landscape in Karijini National Park under open sky

2 nights (3 cool-morning windows)

Two-night Dales Campground base

Best for: Campers who want eastern gorges thoroughly with optional western day trip

Park Stay WA nights at Dales: dawn Fortescue/Fern, optional Circular Pool or rim walking, recovery under stars, then a western lookouts or Handrail day trip if energy and bookings allow. Peak June–September — book early.

View from Oxers Lookout toward Junction Pool and Red Gorge, Karijini National Park

2 nights (western-focused)

Eco Retreat western gorges base

Best for: Visitors prioritising Oxers, Handrail, Hancock logistics and Joffre-side convenience

Base at Karijini Eco Retreat near Joffre for repeated cool-hour access to Weano cluster lookouts and challenges, with an optional Dales day trip if you want the eastern swim classic too. Peak season sells out — book early on official Eco Retreat channels.

View from Oxers Lookout toward Junction Pool and Red Gorge, Karijini National Park

1–2 days (cool hours + designated public viewpoints)

Photography: golden hour rims & mid-morning pools

Best for: Photographers who will still obey barriers, track rules and weather vetoes

Oxers and western rim light at golden hour, pool colour and reflections mid-morning at Dales or Hamersley, crowd strategy and ethical framing — without Class 5 risk unless you separately plan it.

Open plan →

Looking down on Fortescue Falls in Dales Gorge, Karijini National Park — red ironstone walls and waterfall after rain

Half day max outdoor effort (pre-dawn to mid-morning)

Heat-aware early-start (shoulder & summer realism)

Best for: Visitors in warm/shoulder/summer conditions who still want a safe slice of Karijini

Honest hot-weather playbook: pre-dawn departures, lookouts-first defaults, abbreviated swim attempts only when green, hard midday stop, and zero shame in cancelling Class 4/5. November–April is extreme — plan accordingly.

Mount Bruce and Pilbara landscape in Karijini National Park under open sky

4–7+ days (sample structure)

Multi-day Pilbara sample (Karijini + region)

Best for: Self-drivers combining Karijini with Tom Price hub time and broader Pilbara travel

A realistic sample: arrive and resupply Tom Price, two–three nights Karijini (Dales and/or Eco Retreat), east swim + west lookouts/Handrail, optional advanced or Hamersley day, then onward regional buffer — without packing every icon into one cooked afternoon.
