Things to do at Karijini
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with Explore Parks WA / DBCA
Most first visits revolve around Oxers Lookout plus the Dales swimming classic (Fortescue Falls + Fern Pool), with Handrail Pool only when cool, early and water-confident. Hancock Spider Walk is a different sport. Match gorges to fitness — not Instagram ambition.

Lookouts before slots
Oxers (and Knox) first. Decide Handrail or Hancock only after you have seen the junction and checked weather.
Heat + cold water
Early starts, multi-litre water on the rim, dry clothes for the climb-out. Hypothermia after a hot approach is a real Karijini failure mode.
Rain = gorge abort
Flash floods in narrow slots are not theoretical. If rain threatens the catchment, stay on rims and lookouts.
- 1
Oxers Lookout
Easy · high reward · every first western stop
Essential western-gorges icon: short walk to a formed lookout where Weano, Hancock, Joffre and Red meet. Maximum drama per step — do this before any Class 4/5 descent so the landscape has context.
- 2
Fortescue Falls & Fern Pool (Dales)
Moderate · swimming classic · real climb-out
Classic Karijini swimming day: descend to Fortescue Falls, continue to Fern Pool, climb out. Cold water, wet rock and heat on the rim — early starts and turnaround honesty still apply.
- 3
Handrail Pool (Weano)
Hard · wet rock · intermediate filter
Intermediate wet-gorge challenge: handrails, wet rock and a committing reverse climb. Water confidence required — not a first-hour warmup in heat, and not an automatic green light for Hancock.
- 4
Hancock Spider Walk (advanced)
Advanced · Class 5 · fit groups only
Class 5 only: ladders, Spider Walk chimneying and swimming toward Kermits Pool. High consequence if you misjudge water, rock or fitness. Many excellent Karijini trips never do Hancock.
- 5
Hamersley Gorge & Spa Pool colour
Moderate · colour · quieter option
Layered ironstone, reflections and a more approachable swimming option when the western slots are too committing. Still heat, wet rock and official open/closed status — not a free pass.
- 6
Mount Bruce Summit (Punurrunha)
Hard · full day · heat-critical
Serious Grade 5 mountain day on the Honey Hakea Track — steep, exposed, heat-factory conditions. Advanced and cool-weather only; skip entirely if your trip is about gorges and swimming.
- 7
Camping & base logistics
Bases · bookings · east–west transfers
Dales Campground (Park Stay WA), Karijini Eco Retreat near the western cluster, or Tom Price for services and day access. Fuel, water and dingo discipline beat last-minute improvisation.
- 8
Photography (ethics first)
Light · lookouts · pool colour
Banded ironstone at golden hour, multi-gorge drama from Oxers and Knox, pool colour at Fern Pool or Hamersley. Stay behind barriers, no closed-zone “secret spots”, and leave soap out of waterways.
