Where you start
Knox Lookout trailhead (western gorges / signed from park roads)
Follow park signs for Knox Lookout in the western gorge cluster. Short path — still carry water in heat, and stay behind barriers. Surfaces and temporary works can change; verify if mobility access matters to you.
How to get there
- Western gorges road network from Karijini Drive / Weano cluster. Drive to conditions on unsealed sections.
- Often combined in the same half-day as Oxers Lookout and Joffre Lookout when open.
- No dogs. Park only in signed areas.
- Confirm status on Explore Parks WA if storms have been through — rim lookouts are still unsafe in severe weather and lightning.
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk the short signed path to the lookout. Stay on the formed route and behind barriers.
- Take time to read the gorge colour and depth — this is a photography and orientation stop, not a race.
- Supervise children at cliff edges without exception.
- Return the same way. Optionally continue the easy lookout circuit (Oxers, Joffre when suitable) rather than inventing off-track rim walks.
- In extreme heat, do lookouts at first light or late day — even 200 m in 40 °C+ sun is unpleasant and dehydrating.
An easy walk that still feels like Karijini
Not every Karijini highlight requires a gorge descent. Knox Lookout delivers vertical drama and colour for a few minutes of walking. That makes it essential for mixed groups and a smart recovery stop between harder days.
Use it to reset expectations: the park rewards patience and viewpoint literacy, not only Class 5 trophies.
Pairing with Oxers and beyond
Oxers + Knox is the classic easy western double. Add Joffre Lookout when open for a fuller rim story. Save Handrail for people who still have grip, confidence and cool hours left — or for another day.
Always verify lookout access and any temporary closures with Explore Parks WA / DBCA.

Extra tips
- Highest reward-to-effort ratio in the western cluster after Oxers.
- Excellent Plan B when Handrail/Hancock are inappropriate for the group.
- Golden hour side light can be spectacular; mid-morning works for colour in the rock layers.
- Combine with Joffre Lookout if time and energy allow — still keep heat discipline.
- Lower-mobility visitors: confirm surface suitability on the day; short does not always mean smooth.
Often paired with Oxers Lookout— only if energy and weather allow.
