Classic first visit: Dales swimming + Oxers
Full day to overnight (cool hours heavy) · Best for: First-timers who want the postcard swim and the western junction view without Class 5
Guide updated · verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA the morning you go
Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool in cool hours, recovery, then Oxers Lookout (and optional Knox) for multi-gorge drama — the gold-standard first Karijini hit that still feels complete as a day trip from Tom Price or a Dales/Eco overnight.

This plan protects energy and delivers the two images most first visitors came for: a Dales gorge swim and the Oxers multi-gorge junction. You do not need Handrail or Hancock on day one.
Treat midday heat as recovery, not bonus kilometres. November–April demands pre-dawn discipline or a lookouts-only demotion. Always verify track status, swimming advice and road conditions with Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave camp or Tom Price.
Who should pick this: almost every first visitor, mixed-ability groups, and anyone in peak season who booked one solid outdoor day. Who should upgrade later: fit walkers with a second cool morning for Handrail.
Track status and weather change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then follow the timeline below.
Timeline
06:00–06:45
Water fill · status check · depart base
Fill multi-litre water from Tom Price, Eco Retreat or camp supplies. Check Explore Parks WA alerts and weather. If rain is likely, demote to lookouts only. No dogs; dingo food rules if at Dales.
07:00–10:30
Dales: Fortescue Falls + Fern Pool
Park at signed Dales recreation bays. Descend carefully on wet rock/steps to Fortescue Falls; continue to Fern Pool when open. Swim with cold-water awareness; exit before uncontrolled shivering. Climb out with water still in reserve.
10:30–13:30
Heat buffer · food · shade · transfer
Decision gate: if anyone is heat-stressed, cancel western lookouts and recover. Otherwise eat, rehydrate, and transfer toward Weano/Oxers with fuel awareness. Do not start Handrail in rising heat after a big swim.
14:00–16:00
Oxers Lookout (+ optional Knox)
Short walks, huge payoff. Stay behind barriers. Photograph the Weano/Hancock/Joffre/Red junction. Optional Knox Lookout if energy remains. This is success — not a failure to “also do Hancock.”
16:00–evening
Return · recover · stars if camping
Drive out carefully for wildlife and fatigue. Camp at Dales or Eco Retreat if booked; otherwise Tom Price. Sleep early if Handrail is tomorrow.

Parking & access tips
- Signed Dales and Weano recreation parks only — no verge improvisation.
- Peak June–September: arrive early for Dales day bays.
- Keep food sealed — dingoes at Dales.
- Photograph your bay if lots are busy and look similar in dust.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Hancock Spider Walk / Kermits Pool
- Mount Bruce summit
- Same-day Handrail after a hard Fern Pool session in heat
- Hamersley + Kalamina stacked on top without energy
Extra tips
Decision gates
- Rain building → lookouts only; no gorge floors.
- Heat illness signs after Dales → cancel Oxers drive; recover.
- Fern Pool closed or too cold for kids → Fortescue + rim time still counts.
- Running late → protect climb-out and skip Knox without guilt.
Overnight variants
- Dales Campground base: do swim at dawn, Oxers as afternoon/ next morning.
- Eco Retreat base: reverse order if you prefer western dawn light first, Dales next cool morning.
- Tom Price day trip: one focused outdoor block beats two rushed ones.
