Eco Retreat western gorges base
2 nights (western-focused) · Best for: Visitors prioritising Oxers, Handrail, Hancock logistics and Joffre-side convenience
Guide updated · verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA the morning you go
Base at Karijini Eco Retreat near Joffre for repeated cool-hour access to Weano cluster lookouts and challenges, with an optional Dales day trip if you want the eastern swim classic too. Peak season sells out — book early on official Eco Retreat channels.

Eco Retreat is the western convenience play: shorter transfers to Oxers, Knox, Handrail and Hancock; commercial stay comfort versus pure campground self-sufficiency. Verify current room/tent products and dining on the property’s official information.
This site is not affiliated with the Eco Retreat. DBCA rules still govern all walking. Heat, floods and Class ratings do not care where you slept.
Ideal structure: Day 1 lookouts + optional Handrail; Day 2 Hancock only if advanced and green lights, else Hamersley/Dales; recovery always protected.
Track status and weather change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then follow the timeline below.
Timeline
Arrival
Check in · water · sunset lookout if sharp
Settle, hydrate, optional nearby lookout light if you arrive with energy. Sleep prioritised if Handrail/Hancock is tomorrow.
Day 1 · early
Oxers + Knox · optional Handrail
Junction orientation first. Handrail only for intermediate confident groups in stable weather. Midday recovery at the retreat. No forced afternoon slots.
Day 2 · early
Advanced Hancock OR calmer Plan B
Green advanced group: Hancock to Kermits with full warning culture. Otherwise: Hamersley colour swim, Kalamina introduction, or Dales day trip for Fern Pool. One hard thing only.
Day 2 · afternoon/evening
Total recovery · optional easy viewpoint
Food, fluids, early night. Optional short lookout for photographers if legs allow — not another descent.
Departure morning
Buffer · Tom Price resupply · onward
Do not schedule a same-day Perth epic after Class 5. Fuel and water in Tom Price. Keep one weather flex day if the broader Pilbara itinerary continues.
